  1. Braces in math are symbols that are used twice, once to open “ {“ and once to close “}” an argument, expression, or equation. These are commonly referred to as curly brackets and written as { }. In general, we use braces in math for two purposes: For grouping a large equation, in which the second-last bracket is braces or curly brackets.

Brackets are symbols used in pairs to group things together. When we see things inside brackets we do them first (as explained in Order of Operations). The parentheses group 3 and 2 together, and 6 and 4 together, so they get done first: Without the parentheses the multiplication is done first:

Brackets are such symbols that are used in pairs to group terms together. They include terms such as constants or variables with coefficients and separate them from the rest to carry out mathematical operations in order. Figure 1 shows different types of brackets in a numeric expression. Note that each bracket has an opening end and a closing end.

Brackets are often used in mathematical expressions in general to signify grouping where appropriate to prevent ambiguities and increase clarity. In the Cartesian system of coordinates, brackets are used to designate point coordinates. Ex: (4,8) denotes the points on the x-y coordinate system with x-coordinate being 4 and y-coordinate being 8.

Braces { } are used to identify the elements of a set. For example, {a,b,c} denotes a set of three elements a, b and c. Angle brackets ⟨ ⟩ are used in group theory and commutative algebra to specify group presentations, and to denote the subgroup or ideal generated by a collection of elements. See more

In mathematics, brackets of various typographical forms, such as parentheses ( ), square brackets [ ], braces { } and angle brackets ⟨ ⟩, are frequently used in mathematical notation. Generally, such bracketing denotes … See more

In elementary algebra, parentheses ( ) are used to specify the order of operations. Terms inside the bracket are evaluated first; hence 2×(3 + 4) is 14, 20 ÷ (5(1 + 1)) is 2 and (2×3) + 4 is … See more

In the Cartesian coordinate system, brackets are used to specify the coordinates of a point. For example, (2,3) denotes the point with x-coordinate 2 and y-coordinate 3.

    The notation
    $${\displaystyle f^{(n)}(x)}$$
stands for the n-th derivative of function f, applied to argument x. So, for example, if $${\displaystyle f(x)=\exp(\lambda x)}$$, then $${\displaystyle f^{(n)}(x)=\lambda ^{n}\exp(\lambda x)}$$ See more
